I can't be iPadOnly...

By Augusto Pinaud

They trained me that a real computer need a Keyboard.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

They trained me that real computers use a mouse.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

They trained me that the screen should be used on Landscape Mode.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

They trained me that a real computer can multitask.

So I can't be iPadOnly.

They trained me to use only certain applications.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

They trained me to work only on certain places.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

They trained me to interact with the computer only on a certain way.

So I can't be #iPadOnly.

When I said that I have been #iPadOnly since 2011 people look at me as if I am something weird. When I mention about the book #iPadOnly that I co-Wrote with Michael Sliwinski people look at me as if I am telling them stories. When I show them that I do all that from the iPad Mini, usually they begin explaining to me why that will never work for them.

When I try to explain to them that I also was trained to beleive that it wasn't possible to be #iPadOnly, they simply look at me offended because no one trained them, that it is the only way.

Being #iPadOnly is a choice, you can use your old Desktop or Laptop for many more years. There is no need to be #iPadOnly, there is no need to even try. Do you remember 3.5 floppy disk? They were great technology; but I am glad I don't need to use them anymore. Remember when: They trained you to store your files and more on 3.5 floppy disks? Remember when They trained you to better yet, store them on a Hard Drive? We have been trained to use a computer on a certain way, to beleive that a computer can only look a certain way and to work on a certain wat only.

So, because I trained myself to evaluate my assumptions.

Now I am #iPadOnly...

And we don't want praise. Just give examples.

Secondly, we've launched a regular podcast

That's right, we recorded 30+ videos for the book and now we're recording Video and Audio podcast based on your feedback. Which bag to choose for your iPad? - #iPadOnly Show #4

One of the best things about the iPad is its size and portability. Unlike a big bulky laptop it doesn't require a large bag or backpack but it can actually be carried around in a small bag, purse or even bare bones....

So if you've been searching for a bag for your iPad, check out this show where both Augusto and Michael share their bags and experiences and explain what's best to carry your iPad.

Apple bet on #iPadOnly for the second time.

The first time I beleive that Apple bet on #iPadOnly was in 2010 when they decided to launch at the same time with their new "Magical device" a Numbers, Pages and Keynote.

We wrote a lot about the benefits of be #iPadOnly, and how much we have benefit from this. Watching the latest Apple Keynote there was a little moment in which in my opinion Tim Cook shows us once more that they are betting on #iPadOnly. It was the moment in which they announce that with new iOS devices you will get a free copy of Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto and iMovie.

This is in my opinion a brilliant move, not only are some of the finest applications to do work on the iPad, but now if you get a new iPad you will benefit from it. I continue thinking that even if you have no plans to upgrade your iPad you should get them, but maybe it is becasue I think they are the finest apps to work with SpreadSheets, Documents and Presentations.

On the #iPadOnly Videos we show how to use Numbers, so if you have not check it yet, go and spend a little on it. Here is the link

If you get this set of apps for free with your new iPad, would you be more willing to try the #iPadOnly lifestyle?

Waiting for the Apple Event

Unless you have been leaving under a rock (or don´t care for Apple news) you most likely are aware that on September 10 at 10 AM PST Apple will be unveliling something. Without a doubt it is always something exiting at least for me. I have been watching this Keynotes for years and really enjoy them, and the little geek in my heart hope to go and run and buy anything they announce tomorrow (then come the non-geek on me, the more money savy that stop me from buying it all - ok, I also have a wife that will kill me if I do, but that's just extra motivation ;))

The rumors said that there is going to be a lot of iOS 7 and there is going to be iPhones...

Soon enough we willl know.

Another inspiring #iPadOnly story: L.A. Unified awards Apple $30-million contract for iPads

L.A. Unified awards Apple $30-...

The puck is going in this direction. Our book and the way we work are already testimonies to it. And the big contracts and school deals are showing even more promise. This is why I'm so excited about what's next for me and Augusto, we're going to rock your #iPadOnly world this Fall and hopefully inspire a lot more people to think over their habits and get their iPads to work.

iPad 5 vs iPad 4 - comparison based on RUMORS and why I'm excited about it

Post by Michael Sliwinski

If you've read our #iPadOnly book you know that both Augusto and I use different iPads. Augusto is the iPad-mini kind of guy and I use the Retina iPad 4.

When the iOS7 beta rolled to the qualified Apple developers (like myself) I decided to get an iPad mini and install iOS7 on it and see if I can work on the mini-machine full time. I've tried but it's just too small for me. I kept looking too closely to the screen... I just didn't like the experience... I like the Mini if I need to take it for a short trip and read something on it, but not as my main machine.

I just like the crisp Retina screen of the iPad4. I just wish it was a little lighter and a tad smaller. It turns out that my wishes might be coming true.

  • Size - according to the video below, the screen of the iPad 5 will be essentially the same, but the size of the overall iPad will not be a lot more than the screen itself.
  • Weight - according to some other rumors, the iPad5 will have the touch-screen based on a film and not glass, thus making it slimmer and lighter. Just like the mini. Sweet.

Anyway, looks like the iPad5 will be an ideal machine for an #iPadOnly guy like me. And what do you think? Check out the video below:

✔ Understanding an iPad-only person - #iPadOnly Show #3

Many people think we're just "pretending" to be iPad-only. They think we do it because we want to be cool or something... and when they see us work, like really witness us do our daily tasks on the iPad... they finally get it.

In this episode we share our #iPadOnly experiences when people saw us work. When they realized we're not only really working mainly on our iPads. We are actually getting a ton done with them. Enjoy!

Hospitals will be first to go #iPadOnly: iPad with augmented reality app assists in liver surgery

iPad with augmented reality ap... screenshot

Totally cool idea how an iPad with an augmented reality app can help surgery. I can see lots of uses for iPads in hospitals... although I must say I thought it was hillarious when I saw latest "Grey's Anatomy" episodes when they were using Microsoft Surface tablets instead of iPads... but the action in this hospital takes place in Seatlle... and Microsoft is from there.

Anyway, tablets (and I'll say mostly iPads) will be big in hospitals. No doubt about it. We can see examples here.

You can't stop the #iPadOnly movement: First Seven iPad-Only 'Steve Jobs Schools' Open in the Netherlands

First Seven iPad-Only 'Steve J... screenshot

This is the future, people :-)

We know iPad will be big in education but first iPadOnly-schools are a great news for Netherlands. My older daughter is already more acquainted with her iPad than with a computer. She learned how to use the iPhone when she was 1.5 years old. The new generation will be touch-savvy and yes... #iPadOnly :-)

Setting up multiple "from" emails with Gmail on the iPad (iOS)

When I wrote my blog post on email a while ago, we kept getting questions about setting up the email on the iPad. Especially if you have multiple "from" fields. Well, I do have the same problem as I sometimes send emails from my personal address ( and sometimes from my company's address ( so I decided to share this tip with you.

Setting up multiple "from" addresses with Gmail account on iOS (iPad or iPhone)

  • Remove your email account from iOS to set it up again
  • Choose to "Add Account" email account in Settings ("Mail, Contacts, Calendars")
  • When given a choice, go with "IMAP" and not "Gmail"
  • Put your name, Gmail address and the rest of the details...
  • Now advanced setup - put IMAP address: and SMTP address: and in username put your gmail username (whatever you have before and your password. If you're using double-authentication you need to generate special password for IMAP.
  • Once it's set up you should see ✔ (ticks) everywhere and the iPad or iPhone will tell you everything's set up correctly.
  • Now go back to Settings and to your "Mail, Contacts..." and click on the recently-setup account. Click on the "Account" to see the details.
  • This is the tricky part: in iOS5 or iOS6 click on the "Email". This field should read like this: ""
  • Add your "other" email addresses there, separated with a comma, like this: ",,"
  • If you cannot find "," comma on your keyboard, go to Notes app and write this line of emails with comma there and later copy and paste it there to the settings. I know it's a hack, but it works!
  • Don't modify anything else. Save the settings and go to Mail app. You should be able to create a new email and when you click on "from" you'll have a choice of the addresses you just defined.
  • That's it. Your email is set up with multiple from addresses! Congrats.

Note for iOS7: On iOS7 this "Email" field is already a multiple-choice option so on iOS7 you don't have to use comma. Finally Apple learned to improve our lives.

Note for Gmail Settings: Make sure to set up your multiple from addresses also in the web version of Gmail. Otherwise they might not work!

That's it, if you have questions, ask me below this post.

  • Michael

Freedom to Focus

One of my favorite things working #iPadOnly is the ability that I have to focus. I am writing this sitting in a silent dark room at six in the morning with nothing else than the iPad. This is not the first time I do this, actually it happen quite often.

I have been a fan of productivity for many years, I have read many books, posts, listen to podcast and even contributed to the arena with books, podcasts and more. For me the most important thing had been discovering how important is to learn to focus. To date, nothing give me that opportunity as the iPad does, for some reason the iPad create an incredible freedom to focus that it can't be compared with any of the previous machines I had use in the past.

Focus is the key to productivity, we all had much more to do than 24 hours will ever allow us, and we all need to make hard choices on what will get done and what will wait. Without clear focus and concentration the risk to make that a poor decision is really really hard. Once the poor decisition is made, you can correct it, but you also need to re-evaluate everythign in order to choose and decide the next step.

I can sit in the iPad to work and really disconnect from the other distractions, allowing me to focus not only on the job I have in my hands but allowing me to finish this job faster and better.

Carrying only my iPad and being #iPadOnly gives me the freedom to focus whenever I have a chance, to be really effective and to give the best use of the little available time I normally have.
